INTERNATIONAL RECORD REVIEW OUTSTANDING RECORDING
"One of the most important Britten recordings in many a year." Gramophone
"Seriously beautiful …buy it for Les Illuminations; savour it for those new discoveries." Radio 3 CD Review
Ignore the implied appeal in the liner notes for 'advanced hearers' and enjoy Andrew Byrne's White Bone Country. The New York-based Australian composer's atmospheric and textured paean to the desert of his homeland is, even for untrained ears, worthy of repeated listening.
"Energetic but infused with quiet introspection"
Barry Kilpatrick, AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, 2006
Mauldin's "Petroglyph" is a work of more than passing interest. His musical style is neither shocking nor dissonant. It is clearly contemporary writing with a "bite" to it, but the harmonies are near conventional and the style is quite accessible. It is a good example of well-crafted music of our time, which can speak to us without shouting.
AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE, November, 1981
I recently heard selections from this recording on an NPR show. They were five a cappella songs for men's voices and they were lovely. I have since purchased the recording and found it to be uniformly fine. The recording is beautifully done, and I would recommend Mr. McClelland's music to anyone who appreciates lyrical, moving, intelligent choral music.
This is a wonderful CD and would be a great recording to have around over the holidays.
I was attracted to the CD because I'd seen Chris Botti's specials on PBS where he invited friends to play with him (Botti makes an appearance here too).
This is the same idea Bell uses. He says in the notes that his goal was to re-create the intimate atmosphere of the concerts he puts on with friends at his Manhattan apartment.
